The Guardian U.S. has appointed Betsy Reed as its head editor to lead the newsroom, departing her post as editor in chief of The Intercept.

At The Intercept, Reed oversaw investigative journalism that won prizes including the George Polk Award, National Magazine Awards and the Sidney Hillman Prize. Before that, Reed was at The Nation, where she worked as senior editor and then executive editor.

Katharine Viner, the editor in chief at Guardian News & Media said:

“With Betsy joining to lead our U.S. efforts, and with over 1 million paying supporters around the world, I feel very optimistic about the prospects for Guardian U.S.”

Following Reed’s departure, The Intercept has promoted deputy editor Roger Hodge to succeed Reed and Washington editor Nausicaa Renner to deputy editor.
