WSJ seeks West Coast bureau chief

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced journalist to join its U.S. news leadership team as West Coast Bureau Chief.

The editor will run the Journal’s Western front, a team of reporters and a sweeping area of coverage. Geographically, it is 14 states and four time zones from Texas to California, Hawaii and Alaska, too, with the promise of hurricanes and droughts, earthquakes, mudslides and tsunamis.

The subject terrain is equally vast and exciting: politics at a time of the West’s political revolt against Washington; immigration as the Southern border drives debate; the extreme economies of a region with booming housing markets and homeless populations. Plus religion, criminal justice and the environment, and transportation. It is an exciting time to be covering the U.S. and this job is at the heart of shaping our coverage.

The ideal candidate will identify high-impact stories and issues for us to cover. The editor needs to love news and big, fast-breaking news stories. This is a great opportunity for someone eager to be part of the biggest stories of the day, while striving for deeply reported narratives, investigations and enterprise journalism.

The editor needs to be a great manager and collaborator. The job requires leading a reporting team in Los Angeles, where the position is based, as well as San Francisco and Texas. U.S. news reporters frequently collaborate with colleagues and bureaus from across coverage areas at the Journal.
