The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Rome-based reporter to cover the Vatican – a crucial role covering one of the world’s most powerful institutions.
The reporter’s primary responsibility will be to cover the momentous changes Pope Francis is bringing to the Catholic Church worldwide.
A successful candidate must be able to give meaning and breadth to spot coverage of the Church while also conceptualizing and executing sweeping stories on a range of topics, including the reform of the Vatican’s Roman bureaucracy, the ongoing shake-up of the Vatican’s finances, the decline in church membership in many countries and relations with other faiths.
The job will require close coordination with bureaus around the world to bring to life the myriad challenges facing the Catholic Church in the U.S., Europe and the developing world. The reporter must have deep knowledge about the Church and extensive contacts within the Vatican. The role requires fluent Italian.
