WSJ seeks associate SEO editor

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a dynamic Associate SEO editor to play an essential part in driving the daily news conversation, with a focus on ensuring that the Journal is leading the conversation in Search. The Associate SEO Editor works with different bureaus and audience teams across the newsroom to help expose more readers to our outstanding journalism.

The ideal candidate will employ great news judgment and demonstrate a good understanding of SEO for news publishing. You understand how to monitor performance in Top Stories and Organic Search and are confident in maintaining and improving visibility on our most important storylines of the day. You will be required to give clear and concise recommendations to newsroom teams, including our journalists and broader audience groups.

The role requires flexibility for major news moments and other events, which could include evenings and weekends. Typically candidates will work Monday through Friday.

The position is based in our New York City office.

You will:

  • Manage and monitor the real-time performance of WSJ in Search and provide recommendations to improve our ranking on the most important stories of the day
  • Collaborate with programming strategy, social, and platforms to ensure our top priority news utilizing all levers that can contribute to strong search performances.
  • Provide guidance to live coverage teams during live events.
  • Optimize our most important stories before and after publication.
  • Help prepare in advance for significant news events and develop comprehensive coverage strategies.
  • Analyze and report back to the newsroom on SEO successes and failures.
  • Contribute to an SEO calendar with coverage topics and other strategic notes.
  • Actively monitor internal comms for SEO-related requests from coverage.

You have:

  • At least 1-2 years of experience working in a newsroom
  • SEO experience at a news publisher
  • A deep passion for current events, geopolitics and financial markets
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Experience using Google Trends, Google Search Console, Parse.ly, SEMRush or other similar tools
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Able to work in a collaborative environment
  • Knowledge of the search engine industry and best practices
