WSJ seeks an A-hed editor

Posted by Chris Roush

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an editor to take charge of managing and extending the reach of one of the news organization’s most storied franchises – the A-hed.

Named for the shape of its headline, the A-hed is the Journal’s leading daily feature written by anyone of the entire news staff. An anchor of both the homepage and page one, it highlights life’s many absurdities, often revealing eternal truths more keenly than our serious reportage. Its remit is as broad as the world we cover.

You will be charged with ensuring we publish a top-quality story every day, which requires proselytizing on the front end and editing verve on the back end. You will also be charged with figuring out how the A-hed can be most successful in the digital age and how the Journal might expand the franchise into new formats.

You will work alongside a talented team of editors to polish the articles and ensure they have the best possible headlines, social and alert language.

You have:

  • Written great human-driven feature stories
  • A sharp sense of what’s happening in the culture
  • A good sense of humor

You will:

  • Take charge of ensuring we publish excellent A-heds every day
  • Figure out ways to extend the franchise, especially into new digital realms

This job is based in New York and reports to the Enterprise Editor.
