The Wall Street Journal is looking for an enterprising reporter to cover the business of manufacturing and the crucial role it plays in the U.S. economy and consumers’ lives.

The beat includes responsibility for big companies such as Caterpillar, 3M and Whirlpool, as well as coverage of the broader industry – manufacturing companies’ relations with workers and communities, exports and trade policy, and trends in technology and innovation.

You will produce high-metabolism, high-quality coverage, including breaking significant corporate news and offering sharp insight on broad themes, connecting a pillar of the American economy with consumers’ day to day experiences.

You will have a track record of unearthing exclusive stories and finding original angles off the news. You will be intellectually curious and excited about delivering across a range of story formats, including quick news stories and deeply reported enterprise.

You are a self-starter who is adept at sourcing, is highly organized, able to deliver bulletproof copy, and has boundless curiosity and creativity for the beat. You will have proven experience and success on a business, finance or economics beat. You will be facile with data analysis for economic trend stories or willing to learn.

The job is based in Chicago and reports to Chicago bureau chief Joanna Chung.

The Journal’s reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards. We report without fear or bias, and we maintain a proper sense of perspective, detachment and objectivity in our reporting.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter describing how you would approach the role and clips that demonstrate your ability to cover a beat.
