Washington Post seeks economics editor

The Washington Post is seeking an Economics editor to lead one of our most important coverage areas.

The Post’s economics team covers Washington’s battles over the budget, spending, taxes and deficits. It is responsible for tracking the many dimensions of America’s newly confrontational approach to trade. It covers how the government – from the White House and Congress to the Federal Reserve – makes decisions that affect the livelihoods of workers and the bottom lines of companies.

And it is responsible for demystifying the complex and powerful currents running through the U.S. and global economy, with smart conceptual stories and deeply reported enterprise from the field.

The Economics editor should be able to oversee major, fast-moving stories; edit news and enterprise for our biggest platforms; and develop groundbreaking projects. Knowledge of economics and economic policy is a must, as is a keen understanding of how Washington works.

The successful candidate will provide a vision for taking what is already a very strong team and making it even more successful, and for implementing the tools and techniques of digital storytelling to make our report as compelling as possible to a broad audience. We place a high priority on telling accessible, real-world stories about the economy.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom and is not eligible for remote work.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
