Washington Post seeks a business editor

The Washington Post is seeking an accomplished, ambitious and innovative journalist to become its next business editor. The successful candidate will oversee the expansion of our coverage of technology, promote continuing excellence in revealing the political machinations that influence economic policy, and foster high achievement across a panoply of beats in this dynamic and growing department.

The business editor’s portfolio demands dexterity. Our breaking-news team covers economic and business developments early and often, our accountability reporters undertake high-stakes investigations, and our columnists mix passion and expertise in analyzing who wins and who loses in an economy increasingly defined by gaping inequalities. The staff, which this year will number more than 60 journalists, also includes beat reporters covering topics as different as the commercial space industry, race and the economy, and the business of food. Their leader must embrace variety and the challenge of making complex subjects accessible to readers.

Ideal candidates will present a record of success in business or economic journalism, including having edited with distinction for a national or international news organization. They should have a sophisticated understanding of The Post’s approach to tech journalism, which prioritizes coverage of the often-fraught interactions between Washington and Silicon Valley as well as accountability reporting about companies whose presence in our lives becomes ever more profound. We are building our capacity to empower readers to make wise choices about technology.

Ideal candidates will also demonstrate substantial experience in serving a digital audience and a commitment to telling stories in the ways they want to be told – whether with text, visuals, graphics, sound or all the above. Collaboration is a hallmark of The Post’s newsroom, and we will expect this leader to encourage teamwork within the Business staff and with other departments. We are looking for an editor who approaches management with dedication and empathy, who is invigorated by high expectations, and who can prioritize effectively to meet or exceed The Post’s goals.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations later this year, it will not be eligible for remote work.

Interested applicants should submit a résumé and a cover letter outlining their vision for the role to our jobs portal by April 30. The cover letter should be addressed to Managing Editor Cameron Barr.
