Variety seeks an online news editor

Variety is seeking a talented, detail-oriented web editor to work nights and weekends. The news/online editor will identify, write, edit or assign timely stories with our full-time staff, as well as promote the materials across our digital channels. This role will be based in our West Los Angeles office.
Responsibilities: 
  • Manage digital content for Variety’s websites and mobile sites. This includes writing and editing stories, adjusting the display of content on featured pages (i.e. homepage) and the article level, programming social media, writing headlines and optimizing stories.
  • Aggregate news from around the Web
  • Coordinate breaking news coverage with Variety’s reporters and editors
  • Pitch news items, features and evergreen stories
  • Monitor communication channels and respond to various competing priorities
  • Schedule top posts and help manage multi-media on Variety’s key social platforms
  • Use social media as not only a source of news but a traffic driver and engagement tool for community growth and awareness
  • Participate in regular planning discussions w/ the Variety.com staff
  • Regularly monitor website, mobile and social analytics
  • Create subject lines and proof content for daily e-newsletters
Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience working in a high-pressure news environment
  • General entertainment and pop culture knowledge
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices while being mindful of AP style
  • Self-starter, quick-learner, ability to multitask
  • General knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube
  • Basic understanding of web analytics tools
  • The ability to work effectively, both individually and as part of a team
  • Must be available to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
