The Times-Picayune, a locally-owned, Pulitzer Prize-winning news organization dedicated to serving the New Orleans area, is seeking a reporter to join its criminal justice team who has a proven track record of producing competitive dailies along with compelling enterprise that tackles trends, impacts and key policy questions.
Candidates should be relentless about covering breaking news and developing sources to produce exclusives. They also should be drawn to street level reporting and have experience using public records, online tools, social media and data.
This reporter will cover the sheriff’s office, jail and court system in Jefferson Parish, the city’s first-ring suburb and the largest parish in Louisiana. Home to many of the metro area’s most diverse neighborhoods, Jefferson is a regional economic engine imbued with many of the same problems — and promise — as the Crescent City itself.
Applicants should be skilled online and adept at juggling deadline stories with longer-term projects. They should also enjoy working in a collaborative newsroom environment, and always be seeking new ways to engage readers while upholding our standards of fairness and accuracy.
