As the Chronicle Paginator and Online Newsroom Marketer, you will compile report, edit, and design various products for The Spokesman-Review, most importantly it’s the Spokane Daily Chronicle e-edition. The paginator will budget stories, compile wire, factcheck, edit articles, write headlines, and design pages and graphics in a timely manner. Marketing will include writing newsletters about Spokesman-Review staff and newsroom products, such as special sections and projects. You will also update house advertisements about newsroom products, such as the Spokane Daily Chronicle and the Community Journalism Fund and push breaking news alerts and design visually appealing marketing products fit for the Instagram grid.
What you’ll do:
- Edit stories for spelling, grammar, Associated Press style and clarity.
- Ensure fairness in stories, and check for consistency with previous stories.
- Write headlines that are creative, accurate and fair.
- Ensure design of pages follow style guidelines. Must be able to assign stories to newsholes and know how to replace an article with another, in case of breaking news. Should know how to draw basic shapes including headline, subhead, byline, photo and jumplines using InDesign.
- Design, compile, edit and typeset pages across all sections, including our Spokane Daily Chronicle e-edition. Regularly download puzzles, wire, and columns from syndicate services.
- Write additional information for regional wire stories, as well as local stories, for more complete reporting. Call or email S-R reporters directly when needing to confirm information or ask questions regarding articles.
- Design house made advertisements for newspaper-hosted events and special sections.
- Send updated articles online after crucial edits are made. Push breaking news online in a timely manner – must include SEO-quality web headline, summary, taglines, and formatted byline, with accurate planning date/time.
- Proofread pages of section fronts.
- Demonstrate good news judgment when selecting articles from outside sources, including Washington Post, New York Times, Tribune News Service, and regional wire shares.
What you’ll contribute to our team:
- Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) in related fields, such as journalism, from a four-year college or university; or two-plus years of related experience and/or training in a newsroom; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Advance level using InDesign. Intermediate level using Photoshop and/or Illustrator. Entry to intermediate level using Microsoft Outlook. Advance level using Word for Windows. Typing is required. Fast typing is a plus. Blox Total CMS and Adobe InCopy experience a plus.
