The Guardian seeks a senior tech reporter

The Guardian’s West Coast bureau seeks a Senior Technology Reporter/Editor to join the team.

Reports to: West Coast Editors

Normal location: San Francisco, CA or Los Angeles, CA

Terms and conditions: Permanent, full-time, News Media Guild position

Purpose of role:

To break, report and commission technology news and features for the Guardian

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Break news and cover breaking news on the biggest technology issues, companies and people with originality, accuracy and authority
  • Commission, edit and manage technology news in coordination with the West Coast technology reporter and West Coast editors
  • Cover major and emerging themes around technology, generating exclusives that keep the Guardian ahead of competitors
  • Write rich stories that are authoritative in the tech field but also appeal to a general audience
  • Craft compelling, human-centric stories that explore the intersection of technology and other key areas such as health, transport, politics, the environment, education and culture
  • Manage time effectively to balance breaking news, commissioning and feature writing with other formats such as special projects, live-blogging, comment and analysis
  • Develop a working approach that underscores the Guardian’s values of social justice, diversity and equality
  • Act as a mentor to junior reporters, helping to cultivate and support talent in our newsrooms

Knowledge and experience:

  • Proven ability to generate exclusives and must-read coverage at a national level
  • Experience and contacts in the tech industry and beyond
  • Enthusiasm for collaborating on video, audio, interactive and new forms of content for the web and mobile

Skills and aptitudes:

  • Ability to deliver well-written stories on deadline, from exclusives to major unfolding stories as well as fast features and breaking news
  • Apply expertise in a specialist area with enthusiasm and authority but without losing sight of the big picture
  • Enthusiasm for working under pressure and with multiple priorities
  • A team player who thrives in a small office and collaborates well with offices in other time zones
