The Griffin Daily News seeks an editor

We are seeking a full-time editor in our newsroom.

As editor, this person will assist in overseeing a news and sports staff, along with stringers. He or she will be responsible for being a decision-maker, compiling a daily budget, addressing any issues that may arise within the newsroom and helping to cover news stories. This person will work with the managing editor, publisher and marketing manager to generate creative special sections.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Assigning stories and photo assignments
  • Conducting daily final edits
  • Ensuring deadlines are met
  • Updating website and social media
  • Attending meetings
  • Interviewing
  • Proofing daily front pages and working with designers to ensure they’re free of errors
  • Editing copy and approving art
  • Working through breaking news with staff
  • Guiding staff through challenges during the news-gathering process
  • Filing op-ed columns and copy for Viewpoints section
  • Utilizing newsXtreme daily to coordinate pages for printers, as needed
  • Filing obituaries
  • Other duties, as necessary

Requirements:

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications, or the equivalent
  • Must have at least two years experience as a news journalist
  • Must have extensive knowledge of current AP style
  • Must be able to make quick decisions
  • Should have some knowledge of Blox CMS
  • Should have some knowledge of best social media practices
  • Networking skills a plus
  • Must be able to communicate effectively
  • Must have the ability to successfully lead a team
  • Must be deadline-oriented
  • Should be flexible in skills
  • Must live in Griffin or be able to commute
