The Baltimore Banner is hiring a Deputy Sports Editor to help lead a team in creating sports news and analysis that resonates with readers and is worthy of subscribers. The editor will oversee content about the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles, high school sports in the Baltimore area, the annual Preakness Stakes, and other local sports news and trends.

This position will report to the Sports Editor and work closely with our beat writers, columnists, freelance writers, and digital producers to generate high-value content. More than just game results and roster moves, we are looking for creative, fan-focused coverage that suits the modern ways people watch, discuss and enjoy sports.

We encourage candidates to present a strong vision for high-impact sports news and commentary — including off-the-field story angles, the business of our sports teams and leagues, insight from sports analytics, and how to tap into the Baltimore Banner’s capabilities for data visualization and social media. This is your chance to thrive in a primary sports media market and to be inventive and experimental.

 Responsibilities:

  • Bring creative vision and initiative to create and execute sports content and audience engagement strategies
  • Led a team of sports writers, columnists, freelancers, and others — managing them to be productive, creatively engaged, and impactful
  • Work with other Baltimore Banner editors, reporters, and staff to collaborate on coverage where sports intersect other topics
  • Work with journalists to select and refine the themes, angles, and topics of range that will resonate with our audiences

Requirements:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in journalism, including covering or directing sports coverage
  • Strong editing skills and ability to work with writers with varying degrees of skill
  • Strong writing skills and knowledge to make complex topics understandable
  • Strong news judgment and fact-checking skills
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Enthusiasm for news and content that will resonate with readers
  • Demonstrate teamwork and willingness to collaborate with others
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Willingness to work some nights and weekends as news dictates
  • Top-notch planning, organizational, and time management skills
  • Knowledge and use of metrics, social media, and SEO to grow audience and digital subscription
  • A commitment to upholding journalistic values and ethics
  • Prior editing and management experience, including a broad spectrum of sports coverage and a proven track record in digital journalism, is preferred

Please submit a resume and a cover letter detailing your management experience, the coverage you have run, and innovative approaches to sports storytelling.
