The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic is looking for an ambitious associate producer with sharp news judgment to join The Atlantic’s podcast team. You should have a passion for creating intellectually rigorous and sonically compelling audio journalism. The right candidate will be skilled at creative use of tape and bring a witty, nimble approach to covering the most important stories from our website, magazine, and beyond.

The associate producer will be assigned to our flagship weekly news podcast, Radio Atlantic. You’ll work alongside the show’s host and senior producer as well as a small team of producers and an engineer.

What you’ll do:

  • Pitch, book, and produce interviews and stories based on — and independent of — the magazine and website, and proactively offer ideas as news demands it.
  • Work with the team to plan and execute compelling episodes weeks or even months in advance.
  • Participate in newsroom brainstorms and partner with The Atlantic’s writers and editors in making our writing come to life in audio.
  • Conduct background research and make use of archival tape.
  • Pre-interviews for potential sources.
  • Work with the senior producer and engineer to learn how to sound design programming
  • Help shepherd episodes through legal, audience, copy, web editors, and fact checkers to ensure editorial integrity and a vibrant web presence on all available channels.
  • Helping in publishing episodes and related articles.

Skills to have:

  • At least 2 years of experience editing audio with ProTools or other audio editing programs, and willingness to learn ProTools if it’s not your primary DAW.
  • Strong studio production techniques
  • Impeccable judgment and keen understanding of journalism ethics
  • A commitment to bringing voices with diverse backgrounds and worldviews to our podcast
  • Experience in scripting, pre-interviewing, and host collaboration
  • Excellence at meeting deadlines and working independently
  • A collaborative approach to creation and an independent work ethic
  • Kindness, curiosity, and a direct but thoughtful approach to giving feedback

Salary minimum: $65,000; Salary maximum: $80,000
