Sportico is seeking a reporter to join our newsroom and cover the intersection of sports, finance and culture.

This role will focus on the players and personalities that sit at the intersection of sports, business, entertainment and culture. The ideal candidate has experience in sports or business journalism with a proven track record of breaking news and explaining trends in the industry. This candidate has extensive contacts among athletes and agents and a nose for stories that explain the news of the day. Familiarity with athlete business ventures and media platforms is a must as this role will dive into the business beyond the game.

A deep understanding of the sports industry and its key players along with the ability to deliver impactful copy on deadline is required, as is an aggressive and enterprising approach to finding news and building this beat. This role will be based out of Sportico’s NYC newsroom and is ideal for an energetic and ambitious reporter who wants to be on the scene in real time.

Requirements

  • 4+ years’ experience in sports journalism or business journalism with a track record of breaking news and delivering high-impact stories.
  • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of the sports industry, including major leagues (e.g., NFL, NBA, MLB), emerging markets (e.g., esports, women’s sports), and key business aspects like team valuations, sponsorships, media rights, and athlete endorsements.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced newsroom while managing multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to pitch, report and deliver news of exceptional quality.
  • Established relationships within the sports or business sectors or demonstrated ability to quickly build a robust source network.

As PMC values in-person collaboration and team cohesion, employees work onsite 4 days a week and 1 day remotely with a focus on maintaining a vibrant and inclusive culture. Typical wage range: $75k – $90k. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role. The typical candidate is hired below midpoint of the range.
