Have a passion for coverage of local business issues and economic trends? Built a track record for conceiving and publishing sophisticated stories about entrepreneurs, inventors, industries and public and private companies? Eager to play an influential role as a senior leader in an independent media company determined to be the best of its size in the country? If so, Sonoma Media Investments (SMI) is looking for you.
We are seeking an experienced leader, coach and editor with a proven track record of producing top-notch, revelatory business coverage told in new and non-traditional ways digitally. You’ll be responsible for our portfolio-wide business coverage, with a special emphasis on the Business Journal and The Press Democrat.
Our mission is quite simple: Pursue and publish consequential, high-impact content that wins more subscribers, grows traffic and is the authoritative voice of business coverage in the North Bay.
About you:
- You’ll have excellent news judgment and a natural curiosity with a proven knowledge of local economic issues and national trends emanating on Wall Street that affect businesses and consumers on Main Street.
- We’re seeking an experienced editor with a track record for coaching business reporters to do the best work in their careers, producing memorable business-focused content on all platforms and bringing a strong working knowledge and use of social media.
- You must have a keen eye and a passion for breaking news, enterprise and public service reporting of the local economy with a special focus on those both driving it and affected by it.
- You also must be comfortable engaging with readers, newsmakers and advertisers at public events.
- You’ll report to the SMI’s chief content officer, who also is executive editor at The Press Democrat.
Job-Specific Expectations:
- Spearhead coverage of local business and economic trends in the North Bay in a platform-agnostic manner across SMI.
- Assign, edit and directly supervise content-producing staffers at the North Bay Business Journal and The Press Democrat + their related digital sites while seeking opportunities to engage audiences at La Prensa (the region’s premier Spanish-language newspaper and website), the Petaluma Argus-Courier and Sonoma Index-Tribune, other publications in our portfolio.
- Directly conceive and execute the digital and print versions of the North Bay Business Journal, while shaping the daily and Sunday Business sections of The Press Democrat and their respective digital sites.
- Establish strategic business coverage of four key North Bay topics: Wine, cannabis, residential real estate and the restaurant/dining scene.
- We cover plenty of businesses, but the impact on economic trends on consumers is essential and must be a priority.
- Our SMI Business Editor also will have strong collaborative connections to NBBJ’s publisher/senior sales leader and the Senior News Director at The Press Democrat.
- You’ll be charged with assigning, editing and directing the work of local business-reporting staffers and freelancers in concert with digital producers, fellow assignment editors and copydesk/designers.
You must be able to think holistically about the economy while curating specific stories and content presentations to various print and digital platforms, including special sections.
Qualifications:
- BA from accredited college or university or equivalent education and / or experience in journalism or communication.
- At least five years of senior editor experience in a newsroom environment preferred.
The base salary is $78,000 – $95,000 per year, depending on experience.
