San Diego State University seeks KPBS midday edition producer I or II

The KPBS Midday Edition News Producer will produce segments for KPBS Midday Edition on radio, podcast and KPBS.org. The show aims to give listeners a deeper understanding of themselves, others and the community they live in, while aiming to inspire, inform and make listeners think. Producers may be asked to repurpose segments for air on other shows and platforms.

The News Producer works under the supervision of the Midday Edition Senior Producer, and collaborates with members of the news team, including other producers, anchors, hosts, news editors, videographers, video editors, reporters, and production assistants and interns across all platforms.

 

The News Producer is expected to participate in station on-air fundraising activities, and make appearances at KPBS community building events and other public relations activities.

Responsibilities:

The following information is intended to be representative of the work performed by incumbents in this position and is not all-inclusive. Producing (80%)

  • Coordinate and create content for Midday Edition on radio, podcast and KPBS.org.
  • Produce segments, which includes pitching, booking, research and pre-interviews.
  • Writing introductions and questions, anticipating follow-up questions, honing the segment with the host and audio editing.
  • Line produce show.
  • Track and update information in Inception and Google Drive.
  • Writes podcast descriptions/posts and web stories for kpbs.org.
  • Gather audio/video in the field on occasion and as needed.
  • Edit audio on Adobe Audition.
  • May be asked to work on content that falls outside of the regular Midday program, including assisting with KPBS Roundtable, the San Diego News Now podcast or special programs like election shows and debates.

Planning (15%)

  • Read, hear, see and follow major developments on general stories.
  • Maintain contact lists and files for continuing coverage and accumulation of knowledge.
  • Brainstorms segment  ideas with, editors, hosts, reporters and producers.

Other duties as assigned (5%)

  • Attend meetings, represent the station at community building events, responsible for appropriate record keeping, correspondence, phone calls, supplies and equipment, participate in on-air fundraising activities, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work in journalism.

Experience: Level I

  • At least 2 years of progressively responsible or related experience in journalism along with basic news judgment, understanding of journalism ethics and the ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on all platforms.

Experience: Level II

  • At least 4 years of progressively responsible or related experience in journalism along with basic news judgment, understanding of journalism ethics and ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on all platforms (audio, video and web).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Level I

  • Knowledge of journalistic techniques, materials, and equipment used in news production.
  • Knowledge of a full range of production techniques including audio gathering, audio editing and audio recording equipment.
  • Basic computer skills to operate newsroom computer systems such as Inception, and audio  editing software such as Adobe Audition.
  • Ability to consistently write with AP/broadcast style, structure and grammar.
  • Ability to write on at least one platform (audio, video, or web) and the willingness to develop competence on one other or both platforms.
  • Ability to generate engaging segment ideas appropriate for interview shows.
  • Ability to think creatively about topics and segment angles.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, and to respond to breaking news as needed.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex technical work and produce daily news content.
  • Ability to interact/communicate effectively with co-workers and audience members on all relevant news mediums and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to display organization and manage time efficiently, meet deadlines, display detail orientation, and possess good judgment.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise limited judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members and students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Level II

All of those listed in Level I above, plus:

  • Demonstrated excellence in news judgment and ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on all platforms (audio, video and web).
  • Demonstrated strong producing skills with limited oversight.
  • Ability to lead coverage of daily general and breaking news stories on audio, video, or web and its distribution platforms (e.g. Social Media, Newsletters) efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to work with the News and other departments to break, develop, and elevate stories that matter to the community.
  • Ability to perform work requirements and with limited oversight.
  • Ability to regularly exercise judgment and discretion to interpret needs and make journalistic and production decisions.
  • Ability to work and coordinate with individuals at all levels within the newsroom and production in the development and execution of news content.

Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills

  • Broad knowledge of current San Diego regional issues.
  • News experience in public media.
  • Ability to speak, read, write and translate Spanish.

  • Candidates must reside in California, or be willing to relocate, and live within a commutable distance to the SDSU campus at the time of hire.
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results (including a criminal record check).

The salary range for this position is dependent upon qualifications and is non-negotiable. 

  • Producer level I: $31.45 – $32.98 per hour
  • Producer level II: $33.18 – 34.62 per hour
