The San Diego Business Journal has an immediate opportunity for a reporter who’s excited about covering the local health care and biotech (life sciences, pharma, medical devices, etc) industries for the region’s premier local business publication — in print and online.
This is a signature sector in San Diego, spurred by a blend of academic and private research, with businesses ranging from large publicly traded companies to emerging startups. It is a hugely entrepreneurial scene. As such, it is among the highest-profile beats at the Businesss Journal. The reporter on this beat typically also covers clean tech and higher education to lesser degrees.
We’re looking for a reporter who will set the standard in this community for finding and reporting the most important stories and trends on these beats. Candidates must be able to demonstrate reporting and writing skills. We’re looking for a self-starter with strong organizational skills who is able to cultivate sources; has strong analytical and investigative interviewing skills; is able to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online; has a solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure; understands how to leverage relationships with sources to deliver compelling content; and is committed to serving the Business Journal’s readers.
Qualifications: College degree required, journalism or communications-related degree preferred. Experience in business journalism preferred, but a clear passion and aptitude for this niche will ultimately win the job.
