The Rochester (Minnesota) Post Bulletin seeks an experienced and energized leader for its news team. The news editor will oversee the work of southeastern Minnesota’s largest team of reporters, covering a region with 250,000 people and a metro area that centers on the No. 1 hospital in the U.S., Mayo Clinic.
We are looking for someone who is assertive, curious, creative and level-headed, who has high expectations and will insist on consistent excellence. This position demands a knowledgeable leader who can teach younger reporters and hold his/her own with more experienced ones.
Summary:
A news editor assigns and edits news stories, delivering timely content to a targeted audience on all relevant publishing platforms, with an emphasis on digital.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Works directly with reporters on overall direction of story assignments and scheduling of content, with a priority on digital publishing.
- Edits content for all publishing platforms; reviews for accuracy, style, appropriateness and length; writes headlines and offers up additional digital publishing assets as needed.
- Publishes content to digital platforms in a timely manner, using data and metrics to help guide strategic timing and placement of content.
- Contributes to the overall newsroom management and editing needs; participating in both daily meetings and in planning or brainstorming meetings.
- Supervise employees within the department, establish schedules, conduct performance reviews, interview, hire, train, conduct performance reviews and connect employees with training.
- Writes stories and columns as needed.
- Read, evaluate and edit press releases and community-submitted material for publication.
- Leadership of newsroom and/ or content-related projects as needed.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Strongly preferred: 10 or more years of journalism experience for a newspaper, website, magazine or specialty publication.
- Experience using digital analytics and social media tools is preferred.
- AP Style knowledge is a plus.
- Journalism or communications degree is helpful, though equivalent experience will be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
- Teamwork, strong people skills and a collaborative work approach are also essential.
- A strong sense of purpose and urgency for the news.
- Must be able to multitask and juggle many different projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system.
- Must be creative, hardworking and a self-starter.
