Reuters seeks Washington bureau chief

Reuters-LogoReuters is looking for an exceptional editor to lead its Washington bureau and drive coverage of some of the world’s biggest stories from the world’s largest economy and dominant military power.

The Washington bureau chief will need extraordinary skills as a journalist, from breaking news to long-term investigations, and as an organizer and newsroom leader. Deep knowledge of the United States and experience covering big global stories is a must.

The ability to open doors in Washington and a background in a real-time news environment would be an advantage. Above all, the bureau chief needs to be an inspiring leader, able to bring out the best in her or his people.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads the bureau’s news file to ensure it meets company standards for accuracy, speed, impartiality and to the agreed needs of clients
  • Manages staff across disciplines and is regularly and directly involved in story planning, development and delivery
  • Manages staff safety and career development, communicates editorial priorities and sets news coverage priorities as aligned with specialist editors and customer needs
  • Serves as a Reuters news representative for customers and potential customers and represents the company as appropriate at external events and in appearances with other media

Experience:

  • Good people skills are essential to directly manage staff and their safety, working with the business and giving presentations on news when needed for customers
  • At least 10 years experience in journalism
  • A track record of running large teams
  • Global experience and background in real-time news
  • Experience running or working on investigative projects
  • Established track record in coaching and training staff, basic knowledge of all equipment in the bureau including editorial editing systems and multimedia skills.
