The San Francisco bureau of Reuters is looking for a passionate and experienced correspondent to cover one of the most exciting beats in the United States – disruptors, “unicorns” and venture capital in Silicon Valley.
The tech industry is awash in highly valued private companies, including the start-ups worth over $1 billion known as unicorns, that are taking aim at traditional industries, from ride service Uber to cybersecurity/big data company Palantir to mobile payments company Square. This beat will yield exclusive news and insights about the leaders driving this sector; the fundraising and companies’ valuations, which can often seem irrational; and the emerging technologies themselves (i.e. who is the next Uber?).
At the same time, the successful candidate must look beyond the traditional financing mechanisms that have ruled Silicon Valley, to the competition from around the globe, especially China. Companies like handset maker Xiaomi are looking for well-known U.S. investors, while giants such as Alibaba and Tencent are buying stakes in U.S. start-ups, and even financing movies.
Qualifications
We are looking for a self-starter to break news, move markets and produce investible insight. Candidates with reporting experience in Silicon Valley will be preferred, as will candidates with a demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues, since this beat has global scope. A track record of breaking news and producing initiative stories is a must.
