Reuters seeks editor to run commodities/energy coverage

Reuters News is seeking an exceptional journalist, an inspirational leader and an ambitious editor to lead the energy and commodity news file in the Americas, a brief that includes some of the most important financial stories of the modern era, including the boom (and bust) of the U.S. shale revolution; the rise of Brazil and Argentina as preeminent food suppliers to a hungry world; and the looming transformation of the world’s energy supply to a less carbon-intensive future.

As Commodities Editor in Charge for the Americas, you will plan, guide and help execute a two-track strategy of agenda-setting coverage for a team of front-line news editors and bureau chiefs, and more than three dozen dedicated reports from Winnipeg to Buenos Aires, helping them produce sharp, smart market stories for a global audience.

For our core financial business, the absolute priority is being first on the fundamental stories that affect oil, gas, metal and grain markets, whether a fire at a refinery in Houston, crop-threatening floods across the northern plains or labor unrest at a copper mine in Chile, the world’s largest exporter.

But the story – and the ambition – is as broad as it is deep, touching everything from complex, secretive billion-dollar derivative deals in the world’s most actively traded commodity markets to the geopolitics of U.S. sanctions on Russia and the teetering economy in Venezuela.

The ideal candidate will balance coverage on these two interconnected tracks, as comfortable publishing market moving headlines or explaining the nuances of sweet/sour crude spreads as writing investigative stories and in-depth analysis, while constantly exploring new ways to deliver high-value, specialized content to our clients.

Competing at both ends of the news spectrum, from split-second alerts to weeks-long investigations, requires clear leadership, smart strategies and savvy news ideas. A burning enthusiasm for commodity markets, a passion for breaking news and a deft editing touch are also prerequisites. Above all, the job requires someone a fierce, unyielding determination to win.

Requirements:

  • Drive, ambition and a passion for winning every part of the news cycle, from breaking alerts to deep enterprise
  • Proven ability to conceive and execute ahead-of-the-curve stories for a professional financial audience
  • Deep grasp of how complex commodity markets function, and the ability to explain how they work to global readers
  • Masterful editing skills to produce clear, sharp, sophisticated energy market copy, quickly
  • Readiness to lead a large, diverse team through high standards, coaching and career development
  • Excellent inter-personal skills to work well in a variety of teams

Specifically:

  • Minimum 10 years experience in financial journalism, including min 5 years on energy/commodity sector
  • Minimum 5 years experience as a manager and leader of journalists
