Plan Sponsor seeks a financial services reporter

PLANSPONSOR is dedicated to helping employers navigate the complex world of retirement plan design and strategy.

The right person will work with industry sources to deliver daily news stories, scoops, and larger trend pieces on top retirement plans, recordkeepers, investment firms, etc.—all backed with excellent writing skills. We’re seeking someone who is personable enough to hold court with a room full of executives, and savvy enough to spot trends and news in the retirement plan industry and accompanying marketplace.

What You’ll Do:

  • Produce feature-length and short news articles for the PLANSPONSOR website
  • Develop close contacts within the employer-sponsored retirement plan world
  • Break news by working sources, reporting from conferences and attending meetings
  • Manage multiple assignments while meeting daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines
  • Source and produce interviews with retirement plan/adviser/investment manager executives and industry thought leaders
  • Produce daily and bi-monthly newsletters and post stories to the web
  • Research the world’s top retirement plans
  • Help to manage social media platforms

Our Dream Candidate Has:

  • 1 or more years’ experience as a reporter or financial industry professional who takes initiative in finding, pitching, and delivering well-reported and “actionable” stories about issues affecting retirement plans in the form of spot news and long-form articles
  • Ability to multitask and to deliver two news stories per day, plus regular feature and in-depth stories for both print and online
  • Good track record of reporting on the financial industry
  • Ability to read, understand and break news from court filings
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to “work a room”
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Added plus: Understanding of financial markets and investing, HTML, WordPress, FinalCut Pro, podcast, and copyediting experience

He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
