Nashville Business Journal seeks money reporter

The Nashville Business Journal is seeking an aggressive reporter to follow those who hold the purse strings in Music City, from Nashville’s white-hot banking scene to Nashville’s city hall to the state Capitol.

This reporter will cover the intersection of business and government, following Metro Nashville and the state Legislature with an eye toward policies and politics that impact the region’s businesses. The beat covers how money flows in and out of companies in Nashville, from state coffers to local lenders. Lending is critical for businesses and continues to play an even larger role in Nashville as an increasingly number of banks want to break into the area. The city’s fast-growing professional services sector, including its banks and law firms, is seething with new competition, as new and existing players pursue mergers and acquisitions to get a piece of Nashville’s booming economy.

Nashville is one of the hottest cities in the nation, drawing professionals, companies and visitors by the droves. It’s fantastic city with tremendous momentum, but it’s also juggling the struggles of fast growth. Keeping up with the intersection of business and government is not a hobby for our readers. Nashville’s ability and willingness to fix our transportation woes and confront our escalating housing costs, for instance, has a direct impact on businesses’ ability to attract and retain employees. Accordingly, you will become must-read coverage for some of Nashville’s biggest players.

This reporter must produce compelling, high-impact breaking news and enterprise that is packed with perspective and context for Nashville’s business community. This reporter must be able to combine strong traditional journalism skills — source building, sharp interviewing techniques, strong analytical and investigative reporting skills, clear writing and document use — with digital and social media savvy. Business Journal reporters are expected to be the go-to source for news and analysis about their coverage area.

The award-winning Nashville Business Journal is Music City’s source of news and connections for business leaders and power players. We are a fast-paced digital news operation that is growing in subscribers, both online and in print. Owned by American City Business Journals, the NBJ is a sister publication to 43 Business Journals nationwide.

If you want to break news, if you want to lead the conversation in Nashville’s business scene, if you want to cover the region’s top power players, this is the newsroom for you. If you thrive on a fast-paced environment where you can innovate and lead, we invite you to apply.
