Morning Call seeks a growth and development reporter

January 21, 2022

Posted by Chris Roush

The Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., is looking for an aggressive reporter who can develop and craft enterprise stories that our readers can’t get anywhere else. If you’re looking to make your mark, this is the position for you.

The Morning Call is known for its outstanding journalism and journalists, who have gone on to work for the New York Times, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun and other high-profile publications.

The focus of this position will be on growth and development, topics of high interest to our readers. There will be no scarcity of story ideas if you know where to find them.  For example, the area’s rapid warehouse growth, possibly the fastest in the country, is a topic that has pitted economic growth against quality of life. The Lehigh Valley also has three major downtowns, all with their own lineup of development projects and small businesses.

There also will be plenty of opportunities to report and develop stories beyond growth and development. You will be expected to develop a strong network of sources to break stories and develop enterprise pieces well before issues surface in public meetings or social media. You must be a self-starter and have a strong understanding of what interests our readers.

This is not a position that lends itself to meeting agenda journalism. We’re looking for someone who can produce daily stories as well as enterprise coverage in education and other topics of interest.

You will have the opportunity to grow and write in many different forms, including longer-form pieces, breaking news, Q&As, profiles and quick-turn enterprise stories. At The Morning Call, we are looking to engage audiences on their level across multiple platforms, from newsletters to social media.

The Morning Call is known for its watchdog and enterprise reporting. We are in a highly competitive market so an ability to break daily stories and develop well-researched enterprise stories is critical to our mission of delivering what our readers expect from us. You will be expected to develop a strong network of sources and have a strong understanding of what our audience is interested in.

The Morning Call is a Tribune Publishing newspaper, located in the thriving Lehigh Valley, the third-most populous region in the state, 60 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York City.

We offer competitive pay, a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental and vision plans, a 401K plan with a company match, generous paid time off, an employee assistance program, life insurance options and nine paid holidays.

The Morning Call is committed to hiring people with diverse backgrounds, voices and visions. Be yourself. Because that’s the only way we will deliver on our mission to provide meaningful journalism to the diverse communities we serve. We hold ourselves accountable for fostering inclusion and opportunity across race, gender, age, creed, identity and experience.

If you want to become part of The Morning Call team, please send 3-5 clips of your best work, a cover letter explaining why this is the job for you and a resume to Senior Content Editor Jackie Palochko at jpalochko@mcall.com.
