Modern Healthcare seeks managing editor

Modern Healthcare, the industry’s most essential source for news and information, seeks a Managing Editor to help lead its award-winning editorial team.

The ideal candidate will work closely with the Editor to set the highest standards for content, innovation and workplace culture by providing and inspiring creativity, emphasizing accountability and leading by example by engaging staff in collaborative content generation. Reporting to the Editor, this is the No. 2 position in our newsroom.

The Managing Editor provides day-to-day leadership, supervising digital and print production while spearheading the publication of our print magazine and ensuring that our content is executed at the highest level of quality. The Managing Editor also plays a key role in developing and executing the broader editorial strategies of Modern Healthcare, working with the Editor to produce multimedia projects, new digital offerings, special issues, and other editorial extensions of the highly trusted Modern Healthcare brand. The Managing Editor will also help develop and implement a strategy to grow the brand’s audience through collaboration and partnerships with other healthcare and media organizations.

Basic Qualifications:

The candidate must have a proven mastery of storytelling and editing that shows a keen ability to turn potentially obtuse topics, especially in business, into compelling reads; someone who sees the big picture story in the everyday and knows how to frame a story so that it is made fascinating and informative for our audience. Must also exhibit a competitive, nature; an immunity to corporate and government spin and intimidation; a determination to strip away the veneer of PR palaver and get the real story.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
