Modern Healthcare seeks a safety of health care reporter

Modern Healthcare, the pre-eminent source for healthcare business news, is seeking an experienced reporter to cover quality and safety issues in healthcare. The hospital market is competitive and constantly changing. Quality of care is a marketing opportunity that can affect the reputation of hospitals, health systems and insurers and affect their bottom line and the reimbursement they receive from the federal government. This reporter will look at how safety and quality concerns affect business decisions in the C-suite, and how healthcare organizations are innovating to improve patient outcomes.

This position reports, writes and produces for all Modern Healthcare print and digital publications and is expected to generate other forms of editorial content including but not limited to blog posts, podcasts, video, webcasts and social media.

The position will give the successful candidate an opportunity to break stories in the hotly competitive healthcare journalism space and serve our core audience of industry professionals and policymakers. Ideal candidates will also have sources and the savvy to make solid connections that allow this reporter to have a competitive edge.

Qualified applicants must have a deep interest in the industry and be able to tell stories that dig deep into data, trends, policy and programs that are changing the way healthcare is delivered and paid for in the U.S.

Modern Healthcare is based in Chicago with bureaus in Washington, D.C., New York and Cleveland. We will also consider remote workers in several states.

Basic Qualifications

  • Three years minimum experience, with an emphasis on healthcare or business news
  • Able to manage multiple assignments to cover daily news, data analysis and long-term features
  • Experience generating story ideas and developing sources to produce scoops and add context in a competitive environment
  • Consistently meet deadlines and file concise, clean copy that shows how safety and quality concerns impact the financial and business side of the healthcare industry
  • Desire to collaborate and work with other reporters
  • B.A. in journalism or related field

Preferences

Interest in data and multimedia reporting. Modern Healthcare has a data team and regularly includes data, graphics, video or podcast material with its reporting.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
