MLex seeks an IP reporter in DC or San Fran

*** This is an onsite position with five days per week (M-F) in office required at either our Washington, DC or San Francisco, CA newsrooms. ***

 

MLex is seeking a reporter to cover intellectual property regulation, legislation and enforcement with a significant focus on the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the federal courts.

The ideal candidate will have some experience covering Congress, the federal court system and state or federal agencies; and will have enthusiasm for partnering with other reporters.

MLex is a highly collaborative environment, and the reporter will frequently work with reporters focused on similar topics in Brussels, São Paulo, Silicon Valley, Hong Kong and elsewhere. The job offers opportunities to break news on topics such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. The successful candidate will have the ability to write in-depth stories about the implications of legislative, regulatory and judicial matters.

Responsibilities

  •       Writing clear, well-organized news stories and analysis
  •       Locating and organizing relevant information from public documents and other sources
  •       Writing one-paragraph summaries identifying key information in those documents
  •       Creating and modifying portfolios with relevant information
  •       Coordinating with reporters and editors to ensure that portfolios are complete

Requirements

  •       Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or legal background
  •       Experience reporting and writing news; coverage of intellectual property or related matters is preferred
  •       Have solid writing skills and a demonstrated ability to be proactive in shaping MLex’s coverage
  •       Have the ability to provide analysis of events and documents, illuminating context and big-picture trends
  •       Possess a background in law, and/or experience in news or legal organizations is preferred
