A general assignment reporter for MPR News produces daily news for newscasts and longer form stories for magazine programs and talk shows. Duties include turning out digital versions for MPRNews.org. You also will help us develop sources that reflect the diversity of the Twin Cities and Minnesota.
Position Responsibilities:
- Research, report and write news stories as assigned.
- Conduct interviews using radio recording equipment, by phone or Zoom.
- Edit audio, record narration, mix stories ranging from 1 to 4 minutes in length.
- Provide live reports with hosts of magazines and talk shows
- Report, write, shoot video for digital platforms
- Take photographs when needed
- May perform public outreach and presents at conferences and other events to highlight area of expertise
- Develop deep sources useful in breaking news

Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years daily journalism experience
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Quick reaction to breaking news
- Audio editing in Dalet, Adobe Audition or other digital radio products
- Good news judgment and a keen knowledge of current events, along with the ability to relate those events to the audience.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments if needed of both short-and long-term duration.
- Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise and conversational copy
- Effective collaboration with editors, producers and other reporters
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Major market on-air radio experience in a news setting
- A familiarity with public radio programs and the public radio audience
- Reporting using data, FOIA requests
Compensation Range: $33.10 – $39.72/hour.
