We are looking for a hard driving Correspondent who is hungry to take on riveting stories that will be revelatory for our audience. We’re particularly interested in candidates who have an investigative mindset and know how to produce the receipts (first-hand information, data or documents) to back up their work. You need to be willing to do quick-strike investigations and manage long-term projects including podcasts, documentaries and various digital formats. Your reporting should follow our mission of striving to “raise awareness, trigger debate and prompt positive change via non-partisan, independent investigative and documentary journalism” on a regional and national scale.
We’re looking for someone who has experience with accountability journalism and can transform data-driven stories into a narrative form. The Correspondent in this role will combine sound-rich audio journalism with long-form digital content.

Position Responsibilities:
- Functions as a leader in newsgathering by identifying and establishing priorities and goals for coverage of a beat, area of expertise, broad variety of assignments, investigative report, series, documentary, or segments/projects for news or ongoing initiatives in certain subject areas, and significant trends
- Exhibits authority and skill for independently developing stories and knows how to find compelling characters and gripping sound for on-demand audio storytelling.
- Maintains a broad array of sources, including sources with unique information at the highest levels of the employee’s relevant area of expertise.
- Delivers stories and programs with a unique and recognizable style, which may include live reporting, two-ways, and other recorded content performed at an expert level.
- Have an ability to work across platforms and can think creatively to deliver high impact stories.
- Has an investigative mindset that seeks to reveal compelling stories to our audience.
- Is a public records wizard that has the skills to file data requests, negotiate the release of records from unwilling custodians and can manage multiple requests from different jurisdictions.
- Can work on short-term investigations and long-term projects.
- May fill in as editor or host as well as mentoring or training as appropriate/assigned.
Experience:
- 10 or more years of reporting or journalism experience.
Required skill, knowledge, abilities:
- Demonstrated skill in news judgement, accuracy, developing, selecting and completing investigative reporting projects in both audio and digital formats, with minimal or no direct supervision.
- Ability to guide the news reporting work of others.
- Ability to function as a leader in news judgement and agenda setting.
- Has a professional on-air delivery.
- Has audio experience and is able to assemble, edit and mix stories.
- Can use public documents, research and interviews to provide informative journalism to our audiences.
- Strong writing, reporting and interviewing skills with ability to represent MPR News at official or public events.
- Extraordinary ability to synthesize complex and nuanced information.
- Competent in the use of recording and production equipment.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Has data journalism skills in formats like Excel, SQL or R.
- Has understanding of and expertise producing graphics for digital presentation.
Expected Compensation: $75,000-90,000 annually. Exact salary determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure and internal equity.
