The Daily Freeman, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking a reporter for our news team. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate to cover a wide variety of news, crime stories and features. The preferred candidate must be willing to work Police Beat shifts weekends and holidays. The candidate should also be proficient in multimedia and the use of social media.
What you will do:
- Cover a range of general news stories and features
- Develop strong relationships with sources throughout the community
- Work police shifts weekends and holidays, writing occasional news features and crime stories
- Write, take photos and produce videos on deadline
What you will bring:
- Bachelor’s degree (with comparable experience) in journalism or related field
- Strong writing across a variety of story types; experience in municipal reporting preferred
- Proficiency in both photography and video, and a willingness to experiment with new storytelling tools and social media approaches
- A mindset to put the reader first

The Daily Freeman is a seven-day-a-week morning newspaper in Kingston, New York, serving all of Ulster County and parts of Greene and Columbia counties and Northern Dutchess County. The broadsheet publication was founded in 1871 as the Rondout Daily Freeman and was located in the Rondout-West Strand Historic District of Downtown Kingston. The publication is owned by MediaNews Group, Inc.
The hourly wage is $15.69 – $20.59. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
