MarketWatch.com seeks a news editor in San Francisco

MarketWatch.com is looking for a meticulous editor to help shape a fast-paced financial newsroom. The ideal candidate should be a deft handler of copy who’s obsessed with accuracy, style and writing that engages a broad spectrum of readers.

At MarketWatch, published by Dow Jones, our mission is to help readers understand what the news of the moment means for their money and their lives. Living up to that promise means explaining complex topics in a way that is relatable and useful to a broad audience while still speaking credibly to industry professionals. We strive to be authoritative and fast but also engaging and fun.

This role will be based out of our San Francisco Office.

Essential job functions:

  • Razor-sharp skills that make stories sing
  • Ability to gracefully manage steady flow of daily copy
  • Collaborate with reporters and other team editors to sharpen angles and details
  • Ensure that MarketWatch journalism is accessible and free of jargon and PR-speak
  • Ability to help craft sharp and memorable headlines
  • Fluency in social media, and top-notch news judgment.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of four years experience at a consumer-facing publication
  • Working knowledge of business, economics, politics or technology ( bonus points if expertise in any of those)
  • Facility with SEO and audience strategies

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
