Kansas City Biz Journal seeks specials editor

We’re not just giving away plaques here. The Kansas City Business Journal’s specials editor oversees a range of programs that bring attention to the area’s leading companies and executives — attention that informs the business community of rising players and best practices, that identifies storylines and new sources for our newsroom, and that builds powerful networks in our region. The position plays a leading role in structuring programs; soliciting nominations/applications; selecting judging panels; and planning, assigning, reporting and editing special editorial sections.

This position isn’t all about planning. The specials editor plays a big part in writing for our special sections and participates in the daily flow of the newsroom by providing coverage of the residential real estate beat.

Duties

• Participate in planning of the Business Journal’s major awards programs — including Women Who Mean Business, NextGen Leaders, Champions of Business and Best Places to Work — including eligibility requirements, processes for selecting honorees and editorial coverage
• Line up judging panels, compile information for judges and facilitate judging meetings
• Work with editors, designers, photographers and others to plan coverage of events. This will range from personally covering Business Journal panel discussions to planning special sections aligned with our major awards programs.
• Make assignments for special-section coverage, with work performed by the specials editor, newsroom staff and freelance writers
• Edit copy for special sections
• Provide reportorial coverage of the residential real estate beat. This beat was selected for its importance to readers and a flow of coverage that can coexist with the variable nature of the specials schedule.

Skills

• Reporting skills will form a base for this position, in terms of judging the ways of maximizing editorial value of specials and producing material for special sections. This also is required to build a network of sources and provide coverage of the residential real estate beat.
• Copy editing experience, since this position involves editing copy from staff and freelance writers
• Good organization skills — must be able to manage a number of programs at once, both from a scheduling standpoint and in overseeing work of others on special sections
• Ability to collaborate with others — in addition to working with people throughout the newsroom on special sections production, this position also coordinates newsroom efforts with those of the events director

Experience

At least one year of professional reporting experience. Copy editing experience is a definite plus.

Education
