KFF, the non-profit health policy analysis, polling and journalism organization, is seeking a California-based correspondent to join the staff of Kaiser Health News (KHN), its editorially independent newsroom distributing in-depth coverage of health issues across the country.
We are seeking a versatile reporter with a strong interest in health and health policy to produce stories for both California and national audiences. We want someone who can quickly turn around news stories, features and trend pieces that are timely and have edge. We’d like you to be able to tackle longer pieces, too. We want you to help infuse our coverage with bullet-proof reporting and thoughtful writing on the big health care issues affecting people in California and the country and also find the hidden stories that aren’t yet being written. Your job is to make sense of policy-making, breaking news and politics — and turn that knowledge into relatable stories about people for audiences not enmeshed in policy.
We are hoping to find a self-starter who is a constant fountain of ideas. We’d like you to have four or more years of experience, preferably with some background in covering health issues. But experience in covering business and technology is also a plus, as well as some facility to deploy data in the service of journalism. (We’d also value the ability to speak a second language such as Spanish or Chinese.) In short, we’ll be looking at the suite of your skills and interests, rather than one must-have quality.
We want someone who wants to be part of an ambitious and fast-growing organization and can collaborate primarily with our California team but also our journalists in Colorado, Missouri and Washington, D.C.
We’d prefer a person based in Southern California who already has sources and knowledge of issues in the region, but we are also willing to consider candidates who would need to relocate to California or who would be based elsewhere in the state.
Tell us why you want to work at this great organization and why no one else could do this job better than you could. We’re excited to hear from you.
