Jacksonville Business Journal seeks ME

The Jacksonville Business Journal is looking to hire a managing editor.

What you’ll do: Our new managing editor will be a change agent in the newsroom, building upon our successes and making us even better.  You need to be good with words: A big part of the job is directing the daily report — from coaching reporters on the front end to line editing on the back end. You have to go beyond that, though, having a familiarity with video, databases and other digitally focused ways of sharing information as well as helping direct our engagement on social media.

What we want: We’re looking for someone who enjoys the Wall Street Journal, Businessweek and Quartz, but who also revels in the connections of local business news … someone who can walk newer reporters through SEC filings, show them how to dig into the reasons a local company went out of business and shape reporting on a firm expanding into new markets… someone with a sense of urgency who can help us provide the best product for both our digital and our print readers. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent experience, and time spent managing reporters would be a big plus. It’d be great if you had experience covering business — but a good track record on other beats plus an interest in the topic could go far.

Who are we: We used to be a weekly. Now we’re a daily — hourly is probably more accurate — publication dedicated both to breaking news and to then turning around to explain what that news means. We’ve embraced the immediacy of the Internet and relish the opportunities provided by print.

What comes next: If you think you have the chops, email Editor Timothy Gibbons at tgibbons@bizjournals.com. Include your resume, include your clips, include whatever else you think will demonstrate you have what it takes to help us produce the best local business report in Florida. We’re looking to move fast on this, so don’t dawdle if you’re interested.
