The Indianapolis Business Journal is looking for a thoughtful, savvy reporter to cover the two fastest growing counties in Indiana — places where development is exploding and many of the region’s most influential leaders live.
The reporter covering Boone and Hamilton counties — home to thriving communities like Carmel, Fishers, Zionsville, Noblesville, Westfield and more — will cover government and development, with an emphasis on housing, corporate headquarters, tax incentives, mixed-use developments, road projects and overall economic growth.
All IBJ reporters write breaking stories as well as enterprise that help shape the conversation about business in the region. We are looking for a reporter who can develop strong sources to scoop our competition.
IBJ is an award-winning, locally owned news organization that is growing. We interpret business broadly. We have a newsroom of 18 reporters, editors and artists who cover technology, real estate, banking, manufacturing, philanthropy, health care, government and politics. We publish a weekly printed paper and produce significant daily coverage at IBJ.com that is distributed through more than a dozen email newsletters (two of them sent daily, plus a number of specialty weekly newsletters).
This reporter will be the author of one of those newsletters – called North of 96th, named for Hamilton and Boone counties’ location in relation to Indianapolis. It’s great exposure, providing the beat reporter instant name recognition among thousands of IBJ readers in the counties.
Our parent company is IBJ Media, which is locally owned and managed and also publishes The Indiana Lawyer every other week. In September, IBJ Media acquired Inside INdiana Business, a statewide news platform that includes a weekly television show, daily radio reports, a website and daily email newsletters. We expect increasing cooperation between IBJ and Inside INdiana Business, which means IBJ staffers could have new opportunities in broadcast as well.
Job Requirements
- Experience with both breaking news and enterprise.
- Ability to work independently and generate story ideas.
- Experience promoting stories and reporting with social media.
- Ability to shoot smart-phone images and video.
- Fast, thorough writing.

In Indianapolis, you will find professional sports, world class museums and performance venues, and neighborhoods filled with great restaurants, bike trails and parks.
IBJ’s offices are located on the city’s historic Monument Circle—the literal and figurative heart of Indianapolis, just blocks from stadiums, the Statehouse, the Indianapolis City Market and much more. In addition, this reporter will have access to an office in a co-working space in the city of Fishers in Hamilton County.
