We are looking for an astute observer of the political and social fabric who can produce the kind of compelling commentary that educates and engages readers on a number of levels, inspiring deeper thinking and civil debate on important issues.
The ideal candidate will be an excellent writer with strong research and reporting skills who is as comfortable analyzing data sets as they are “talking story” at home and in coffee shops, restaurants and bars. This is a high-energy position that requires a sharp thinker who wants to explore why things are the way they are, as well as how to make them better.
The opinion writer works as a member of the editorial board to produce commentary that reflects the consensus view of the board but has the flexibility to write bylined columns on a broad range of subjects as well.
A journalism background and news/opinion writing experience is preferred, but we’re open to other candidates who have developed persuasive writing skills — lawyers, speechwriters, social media commentators, for example. We’d like to see at least five to seven years of experience in some kind of opinion-writing field.
The salary for this position depends on experience and qualifications, but is anticipated to be a minimum of $70,000.
Send a cover letter explaining why you want this job and what you would do with the opportunity, a resume and at least five writing samples to Editor Patti Epler at patti@civilbeat.org.
