Do you go to sleep at night with a smile on your face, knowing you’ve got a great scoop coming the next day? Do you greet the arrival of a Form S-1 in your inbox like a kid tearing into a birthday present? Do you love figuring out headlines? Do you have a knack for cultivating sources? Are you willing to follow up for months on a public records request? Can you connect the dots between politics and the tech beat, quickly study up to explain a technical topic to a wide audience, figure out the newsworthy details of a new technology product, and find stories in the footnotes of earnings reports?
We get to do all of these things, and more, every day in our jobs. We’re looking for someone to join us who loves this stuff as much as we do.
The journalist in this role will find, report and break stories about influential Pacific Northwest companies, entrepreneurs, researchers, and leaders in one of the most dynamic and interesting regions of the world — home to tech giants such as Microsoft and Amazon; large engineering centers for companies such as Facebook and Google; major public companies such as Expedia, Redfin, F5 Networks and Zillow; fast-growing technology startups; cutting-edge health tech ventures; innovative cloud and AI companies; major scientific research institutions; and ambitious global philanthropies.
The core of the role is producing daily stories about technology, startups, health technology, artificial intelligence, science, and innovation. The person in the role will also work on in-depth projects and profiles, manage standing editorial features, contribute to podcasts and videos, speak and interview newsmakers at events (virtual, for now), and collaborate with other members of the GeekWire team.
Who you are
You are an experienced journalist comfortable working independently and as part of a team. You have a passion for quality journalism and the inner workings of technology and business. You write quickly and clearly. You are a self-starter and love to break big stories. You offer smart analysis and deep reporting with the ability to report and write quickly on deadline. You’re comfortable taking photos and videos, making public records requests, searching court filings, analyzing financial statements, and interacting with members of the community in person and on social media. You are eager to learn and grow professionally through your work as a journalist. You are experienced conducting interviews and working with sources. You follow high standards of journalistic ethics. You are a team player who communicates well and thrives in a fast-paced startup environment.
Requirements
This position is full-time and the role offers a flexible and variable schedule, with some days starting early in the morning for a breaking story, and others running later into the evening. Our team is working remotely from home during the pandemic, but we miss our office in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, and we hope to return when it’s safe.
Although this position is ideally based in the Seattle region, GeekWire is open to considering qualified applicants based elsewhere in the United States.
Who we are
Founded in 2011 by two veteran journalists, GeekWire is a dynamic and growing media company, guided by a strong set of core values (below). What happens in Seattle matters everywhere, and we are uniquely positioned to find and report stories that shape the future. Our events bring the Pacific Northwest tech community together, and our coverage attracts readers, listeners and viewers from around the world.
GeekWire is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All employment decisions at GeekWire are decided on the basis of qualifications, merit and business needs.
How To Apply
To apply, please submit a resume, three writing samples, and a cover letter to apply@geekwire.com. If you require assistance or an accommodation during the application process due to a disability, you may contact us at hr@geekwire.com.
