We are seeking someone with experience covering trials and combing through court documents.
Experience covering a major federal agency is also a plus.

Responsibilities:
- Create content about criminal justice issues that inform and engage key audiences and platforms
- Provide thoughtful, in-depth reporting of complex issues
- Build a network of sources on DOJ matters
- Collaborate with content team to provide all appropriate elements for stories (i.e., photos, videos, and graphics)
- Promote personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand
- Provide great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions
- Perform other duties as necessary
Qualifications:
- We are seeking someone with experience covering trials and combing through court documents
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ reporting/newsroom experience
- Prior experience covering the criminal justice beat is a significant advantage
- The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong news judgment, the ability to file accurate, concise, and clean copy on tight deadlines, and to build on breaking news with smart short- and long-term enterprise ideas
- A mindset of curiosity, growth and change, and a willingness to try, be wrong, and learn from setbacks
- A flair for lively, conversation writing and engaging headlines
- Experience generating quick-turn news stories, thoughtful enterprise, and in-depth projects
- An interest in new ways of informing and engaging audiences on social platforms and alternate story forms
- Flexibility to work night and weekend shifts as needed
- A collaborative approach and strong communication skills
- Understanding of – or eagerness to learn about – audience analytics and how they can help inform content decisions
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law
Salary: Minimum Salary: $72,000. The hourly rate for this role will range between $34.62 and $50.87.
