The Wall Street Journal is seeking an editor to help lead our coverage of media, an industry rich with big personalities, blockbuster deals and storylines at the intersection of business, technology and culture.
The job involves developing and executing stories in areas including streaming video, publishing, sports-media, cable news and advertising while ensuring the Journal’s coverage of media mergers remains first-rate. The ideal candidate will be able to guide reporters toward agenda-setting news stories, help them conceive and deliver revelatory enterprise, and provide constructive advice on how to augment reporting and elevate writing.
A knack for working swiftly, carefully and calmly on deadline is a must, as is a creative energy that can jumpstart story meetings and lead to imaginative forms of storytelling. The New York-based position is part of the Media & Entertainment team that is charged with covering companies like Netflix, Disney, Warner, Comcast and Paramount.
Alongside talented reporters, you’ll be following themes such as the entertainment industry’s frenetic hunt for streaming profits, the ongoing attempts by news companies and advertisers to reconcile the shift in audiences toward social platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, and the immense impact generative-AI technologies are poised to have across all media categories.
The role calls for close collaboration with the team’s other editors in New York and Los Angeles, and reports to Media & Entertainment Editor Amol Sharma.
You will:
- Work closely with media reporters in New York to ensure they are generating a strong pipeline of stories on their beats.
- Handle day-to-day news stories in the Media & Entertainment group alongside the other two editors.
- Help conceive, develop and edit the team’s longer-form stories.
- Help lead Weekly team meetings in New York to discuss ongoing coverage and future plans.
You have:
- Previous editing experience or several years of business-reporting experience, with a track record of driving coverage and delivering clean copy on deadline.
- A demonstrated ability to edit or write longer-form features and enterprise stories.
- A familiarity with business news and interest in covering the media and entertainment business.
- An ability to work with data and conceive of stories driven by visuals.
- The communication skills to coordinate coverage within the media team and across other teams within the Journal.
