WSJ seeks a director of data journalism

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a senior leader to oversee, evangelize and expand sophisticated and numerate data journalism across the newsroom.

The Director of Data Journalism will be a central conduit for the work of experts and practitioners across coverage areas. This position will collaborate closely with other senior leaders to drive ambitious thinking about data, helping subject editors improve and grow opportunities for high quality computational journalism and executing projects as needed. The role will be responsible for bringing rigor to the use of data and expanding toolsets into emerging technologies.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced manager who can use deep knowledge and skill with data manipulation to create engaging, insightful and unique stories.

You will:

  • Drive ambitious thinking about data journalism in all corners of the newsroom.
  • Vet and create datasets that can be mined for insights and ideas.
  • Ensure that data experts across the newsroom have support and resources to do their work, including access to technology and infrastructure.
  • Build a core of best practices and cutting-edge tools that elevate the work of data journalists.
  • Supervise and implement programs to increase data literacy across the newsroom staff.
  • Expand our data-journalism capabilities in new and emerging areas including open-source intelligence gathering, geospatial data analysis, natural-language processing and artificial-intelligence and machine-learning model training.

You have:

  • At least 12 years of professional journalism experience.
  • Expertise in using quantitative methods in social science as well as data analysis languages like R or Python
  • Familiarity with methods of acquiring data such as coding and scraping, and experience cleaning and analyzing datasets
  • Proven experience in a leadership role, managing and influencing across multiple disciplines.
  • A demonstrated ability to separate from the pack and find original approaches to data.
  • A commitment to collegial work in a big, international newsroom.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
