Reuters seeks an auto correspondent in Detroit

Reuters is looking for an Automotive Correspondent to join our global team, paying a particular focus on the U.S. market.

The automotive sector is undergoing a historic change with the transition to electric vehicles and the effort to develop self-driving technology. Tesla has proven an EV leader but faces immense competition from rising Chinese electric-car producers with an eye on exporting. Legacy automakers, meanwhile, are spending billions of dollars to catch up as the whole sector races for the next battery breakthroughs to make EVs more affordable.

As an Automotive Correspondent, you’ll take ownership of the U.S. auto market beat and the companies that define it, including Tesla, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler-parent Stellantis and other major automakers. Stories will cover everything from technological innovation to corporate strategy, government policy, branding, safety, labor and the environment.

Reporting to the Detroit Bureau Chief, you’ll work with a team of auto correspondents and editors in the U.S. and globally to provide exclusive news and insight for investors, industry insiders and general readers who rely on Reuters news through media partners and our own platforms.

About the Role

As Automotive Correspondent at Reuters, you will:

  • Develop sources in the rapidly changing auto industry.
  • Cover the biggest breaking industry news and the events that demand reader attention on the beat and beyond.
  • Deliver exclusive news and deeply reported explanatory and investigative stories offering distinctive insight to investors, industry insiders and general readers.
  • Track and analyze trends in sales, market positioning and corporate strategy.
  • Seize opportunities to cover how the auto industry developments impact the environment, battery-mineral mining, trade, labor and other major issues, in collaboration with other Reuters teams globally.
  • Work closely with Reuters photographers, TV crews and graphics team to develop multimedia stories to appeal to readers.

About You

You’re a fit for the role of Automotive Correspondent at Reuters if you:

  • Have demonstrable experience of breaking news and writing deeply reported stories on a beat (please note, this does not have to be specific to the automotive industry).
  • Are a creative storyteller with a sharp eye for visual news elements that reveal a narrative.
  • Have the ability to write quickly and accurately under deadline pressure.
  • Can meet tight deadlines and take charge of daily planning.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with a variety of collaborators.
  • A track record on the automotive beat and an existing source network are desirable but not essential.

Please Note: Completed applications must be submitted by Sunday 11th February 2024.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Reuters and the NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, AFL-CIO.
