POLITICO is looking for an ambitious reporter to cover trade policy as part of our growing newsroom in London.
This is a beat at the core of politics and policy. The successful candidate should have the skills to build deep contacts with politicians, trade negotiators and industry executives in London and other national capitals, as the U.K. develops its post-Brexit trade posture.
You will deliver scoops and sharply written stories. Working as part of our trade team in London, you’ll be responsible for co-authoring our daily trade newsletter for subscribers, and live news updates throughout the day. You’ll also land enterprise stories both for subscribers and for our free website – writing for an expert audience as well as a broader readership.
We’re looking for a collaborative journalist with a hunger to break stories, cultivate sources and develop a specialist beat. This is a full-time role based in our London newsroom.
What You’ll Do:
- Co-author our highly successful Morning Trade UK newsletter, and report for our trade policy subscription service
- Develop scoops and original story ideas, both for the subscription service and for POLITICO’s free website
- Cover U.K. trade negotiations and the work of the Department for Business and Trade/other government departments in formulating UK trade policy
- Cover the implications of trade policy decisions for key sectors and lobbying efforts by industry
What You’ll Need:
- Demonstrable interest in Westminster politics and policy
- A track record of breaking news
- Strong attention to detail and unafraid of digging into policy coverage in some depth
- Experience developing a network of sources
- Comfortable working at speed and developing longer-term projects
- Self-starter with a willingness to work somewhat flexibly
