Morningstar.com seeks an experienced financial journalist for a reporter position on our Canada editorial team.

Our mission at Morningstar is to help investors meet their financial goals, and our coverage of investing and the markets is through that lens. That means putting the day-to-day noise of the markets into context while educating investors about the news and trends that are critical to making smart decisions.

Morningstar is the go-to name for financial data and analysis for individual investors, advisors, and industry professionals. This role provides a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic reporter to cover important trends in Canadian financial markets, flows and fund product trends and investing ideas for an audience with a deep interest in the subject. In crafting your stories, you’ll be able to plug directly into Morningstar’s data, tools and teams of analysts.

We are looking for a writer who can bring a lively, engaging style, with a proven ability to take complex investing and industry subjects and make them accessible to a wide range of readers. In addition, you will be expected to bring in the door access to knowledgeable sources from outside Morningstar.

Responsibilities

  • Produce three to four articles per week, ranging from short takes to longer deep dives.
  • Identify and report on key performance updates among mutual funds, stocks and ETFs, as well as Canadian personal finance and macroeconomic trends.
  • Provide takes on investment markets and opportunities through articles and videos.
  • Assist senior editor with lineups, content planning and other editorial tasks.
  • Interview and profile top-performing and high-profile fund managers.
  • Explore trends in how investors are responding across the evolving market landscape.

We are looking for:

  • 2+ years covering investing.
  • A passion for writing about investing.
  • Proven ability to write on deadline and same-day turnaround.
  • Strong news judgement in identifying subjects for articles.
  • Ability to turn data into narratives and graphics.
  • Demonstrated comfort with Excel and learning new databases and other tools.
  • Curious, creative thinker with a collaborative approach to producing commentary and storytelling.
  • A bachelor’s degree is required.
  • This position is a hybrid role requiring 3 days in office in our Toronto location
