MarketWatch is seeking an ambitious and energetic journalist for its Personal Finance/Moneyist team. The Moneyist, a wildly popular MarketWatch series, delivers clear-headed advice on real-world money dilemmas with empathy, tough love, and expertise. We are looking for someone who can focus specifically on the personal finances of Americans who are navigating money-related conundrums as they graduate college, launch households, work through romantic relationships, build community, deal with aging parents and emerge in their places of work.

MarketWatch casts a wide net in its personal finance coverage. We strive to keep readers informed about core personal finance topics such as credit-card debt, student loans, taxes, mortgage rates, careers and travel, but we also strive to enlighten our audience about new trends related to how people manage — or don’t manage — their money.

You Will:

  • Write engaging advice columns answering reader questions on personal finance topics.
  • Anticipate readers’ questions about money and address them with insightful, well-researched advice.
  • Report on how money influences relationships, including those with family, friends, partners, and coworkers.
  • Identify and pitch creative, compelling story ideas that explore the emotional and psychological aspects of money.
  • Write polished, clear prose that balances sensitivity with expertise.
  • Be a skilled, insightful, and empathetic interviewer and advice giver.
  • Work well under pressure and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Be meticulous in copy and ambitious in reporting, ensuring accuracy and depth in all coverage.
  • Contribute to MarketWatch’s existing portfolio of advice columns on money management, investing, taxes, real estate, and retirement.
  • Provide thoughtful analysis on how financial habits and attitudes shape interpersonal dynamics.

You Have:

  • 3-5 years of reporting experience
  • Fluency in consumer finance and economics
  • A track record of writing unique, engaging financial stories
  • A knack for finding unique angles off the news
  • Facility with SEO and audience strategies
