MarketWatch.com seeks a personal finance reporter

MarketWatch.com seeks an ambitious reporter for its personal finance team who can filter the news of the day through a single question: What does this mean for me and my money?

It’s what readers of every news story wonder on some level, and in a financial climate with boundless opportunity for bad decision making, answering it has never been more important. We are experiencing a cultural moment in which long-held attitudes about consumerism, capitalism, and the meaning of professional success are being challenged.

MarketWatch casts a wide net in its personal finance coverage. We strive to keep readers informed about core personal finance topics such as credit-card debt, student loans, taxes, and mortgage rates, but we also want to enlighten our audience about new trends related to how people manage (or don’t manage) their money.

You will write accessible, reader-friendly stories on a daily basis, and also craft longer features, both anticipating and analyzing consumer trends. You will be part of a small team of writers, and report to MarketWatch’s Personal Finance Editor.

The role will be based in New York, though other locations will be considered on merit.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to gracefully juggle multiple stories a day
  • Collaborate with colleagues and other departments
  • Write jargon-free, clear financial prose
  • Aptitude in crafting sharp and memorable headlines
  • Top-notch news judgment
  • Fluency in consumer finance and economics

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience writing on consumer-related platforms
  • Facility with SEO and audience strategies
  • Adept at finding unique angles off the news
  • A track record of writing unique, engaging stories

You will:

  • Thrive in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Work well under pressure and with other members of the team
  • Be a skilled, insightful and compassionate interviewer
  • Be meticulous in your copy and ambitious in your reporting
  • Pitch creative and compelling story ideas
  • Anticipate questions readers have about money in a sometimes confusing economic environment
