Insider seeks senior editor for tech and trending biz news

Insider is hiring a Senior Editor to join our Global Tech and Trending Business News team.

Our mission is to be the most influential and beloved journalism company for the digital generation. We cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. Our team members embody and uphold Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Role & Team:

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about business news and has a knack for writing conversational headlines and telling stories in a relatable way. Candidates should have experience pitching, framing, and editing stories that appeal to a big audience. This team aims to publish stories that readers will devour and can’t find anywhere else. It looks for compelling characters who can tell a story. The Senior Editor should have experience helping writers find those characters and be excited by Insider’s commitment to telling “only fascinating stories.” No wire-service reports here.

The Senior Editor will report to Deputy Editor Steven Tweedie and work closely with other editors on directing the team’s coverage. Ideally, this editor will work East Coast hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a group of reporters focused on covering the biggest and most compelling business stories of the day across industries, with a strong focus in tech news.
  • Assign and edit stories that frequently lead Insider’s homepage and newsletters.
  • Brainstorm creative angles into the stories everyone is talking about, whether it’s through photo-based storytelling, as-told-to interview-based essays, or fast-follow analysis.
  • Coordinate breaking news coverage, handling sensitive story edits, sharpening headlines.
  • Coaching writers through the reporting process.

The Ideal Candidate Should Have:

  • A sharp news sense, a passion for storytelling, and a wealth of great ideas
  • Excellent communication skills and comfortable frequently giving and receiving feedback.
  • Impeccable attention to detail, a digital-first mindset, and the ability to motivate people to do their best work.
  • Proven experience editing business stories in a fast-paced newsroom that appeal to readers.
  • The ability to work with a mix of story types, including breaking news, visual features, and analysis
  • Impeccable news judgment
  • Experience managing a team of editors and reporters
  • A self-starter attitude and strong organizational skills
  • A natural ability for telling stories in a relatable and compelling way that readers love
  • A love of Insider and what we do
  • Strong knowledge of social media and SEO
