The Houston Chronicle seeks a business reporter to anchor our continuous online report, covering breaking news, consumer news, the latest corporate transactions and numerous other developments in one of the nation’s most dynamic and diverse regional economies.
Position Summary
The reporter will work with department’s digital producer to keep our products fresh, getting the latest stories to readers quickly and presenting them in different formats for our growing digital-only audience of 75,000-plus, along with a robust print audience, the overwhelming majority of whom have activated their digital accounts.
Familiarity with alternative story formats/takeaways is a must. The successful candidate also will assist in production of Business Department newsletters.
The job also includes ample time to follow-up on trending topics that merit deeper looks and pursue substantial enterprise stories that run both online and in print. This is a great opportunity for young, ambitious reporters looking to make their bones in the nation’s fourth largest city.
This position reports to the business editor.
Position Responsibilities
- Produce a steady drumbeat of stories of varying lengths and formats
- Work alongside editors to determine what stories are worth pursuing — and formulating plans for pushing them forward
- Work collaboratively with editors, other reporters (including beat reporters when applicable), photographers, the digital desk and the “DevHub” data visualization team to tell impactful stories across platforms that engage and retain local subscribers and other readers
- Be active on social media, both in terms of sharing perspective, but also engaging audience This means posting short “starter versions” of stories before Tweeting them or putting them on other social platforms
- Write with clarity and authority
Skills And Experience
- Minimum 4 years of experience as a reporter or digital producer
- Previous business reporting experience strongly preferred
- Extraordinary reporting and writing skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Work collaboratively with others, share bylines when applicable, communicate with editors
