Hartford Biz Journal seeks a biz reporter

Hartford Business Journal, Connecticut’s leading business-to-business publication, is looking for a full-time staff writer. The qualified candidate must be an experienced journalist with multimedia skills, and capable of coming up with engaging story ideas for our business audience, writing clean copy and working both independently and collaboratively.

Business journalism experience is a plus. This is a hybrid position, which means the new hire will report to HBJ’s new, modern office space in downtown Hartford and have the opportunity to work remotely on some days. The right candidate doesn’t need to be based in Greater Hartford, but must live in Connecticut. HBJ has shifted its focus to statewide coverage, so job candidates who live in New Haven or Fairfield County are encouraged to apply. The staff writer position will contribute to HBJ’s daily e-newsletter — writing breaking news stories — and our biweekly print publication, writing 2  more in-depth stories and features.

The right hire must be enterprising, willing to juggle various responsibilities at one time, able to write both breaking news and longer-form stories and be a self-starter when it comes to generating story ideas and sources. Just as important, you must be willing and able to meet with the region’s top business leaders. You should be comfortable talking to and interviewing a range of executives, from Fortune 500 CEOs to small and midsize business owners. Specific industry beats will be assigned; focus areas will include manufacturing, professional services (law firms and accounting firms) and cannabis.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in journalism
  • A business journalism background a plus
  • Ability to see the big picture, strategize and solve problems
  • Clean and concise writer
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • The desire to work in a fast-paced, collaborative and creative work environment

To apply, send clips, a resume and a cover letter to editor Greg Bordonaro at gbordonaro@hartfordbusiness.com.
